The holiday was originally intended to be a celebration of everything that makes the American worker, because after people died to push for positive change in the workplace (that people now take for granted), we experienced significant positive action between 1920 and 1970.
Unfortunately, from 1970 onward, the US government has done everything in its power to devalue the American worker, including effectively removing their right to simply work and be left alone.
